Jay Clarke storms into top 400

Jay Clarke is on his way ! After a fabulous last 12 months he has made a real surge up the World tennis rankings breaking into the top 400 and he has no intention of resting there! Supported by a fabulous team in Yasmin, Curtis and Earol they are doing excellent work. Look out for him competing in the UK in the upcoming grass court season including events at Nottingham and Wimbledon.


Recent results in International badminton events continue to show the excellent progress being made by a group of young focused, determined competitors within the Derbyshire area.

David Hong and Hope Warner have recently picked up a medal in the European Junior U15 Championships in Kazan, Russia.

Tiara Samuel won a bronze medal in the 2016 U19 National Championships.

Grace King begins her comeback from a serious knee injury next week in the Dutch International Junior event.

Former DIS Swimmer leads England to Commonwealth Final

DERBYSHIRE swimmer and former DIS athlete Molly Renshaw helped England qualify for the women’s 4x100m medley relay final at the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow.

Renshaw, who won bronze in the 200m breaststroke, swam the second leg in Tuesday morning’s heat as England qualified second fastest behind Australia.

Commonwealth Games: Australia off to winning start

AUSTRALIA’S badminton team got their Commonwealth Games campaign off to a winning start in Glasgow.

They beat Wales 4-1 in their opening pool match in the mixed team event on Thursday.

Australia, who prepared for the Games with a training camp in South Derbyshire, take on the Falklands Islands and Canada on Friday as they look to secure a place in the knockout stages.

Australian Badminton Team Return to Derby

Australia’s national badminton team are to return to Derbyshire for a pre-Commonwealth Games training camp, two years after they spent a week in the county preparing for the 2012 Games.

Players and coaches from Australia will spend a week in South Derbyshire just days before the Games begin, before making their way to Glasgow.

The team will once again train in South Derbyshire at Etwall Leisure Centre, which is a recognised national specialist badminton facility. It contains a six court sports hall designed to National Badminton England standards.

The team are also due to take part in an international exhibition against a GB All Stars team which is set to include Olympic silver medallists Gail Emms MBE and Nathan Robertson, and Commonwealth Games silver and bronze medallist Jenny Wallwork. As part of the week team coaches Lasse Bundgaard and Ricky Yu will give an insight into their coaching methods at a breakfast event for sports coaches in Derbyshire, being held at the University of Derby.

GRACE KING -‘National Champion’

Derbyshire’s Carlton sponsored Grace King became National under 13 Champion in girls singles and a bronze medalist in ladies doubles last weekend at the English National Championships in Nottingham.In the final she beat Sian Kelly, who had never previously been beaten by anyone in her same age-group.Grace won the bronze medal in the ladies doubles partnering fellow Derbyshire player Ellie Wheatley.

Donna Kellogg creating a real ‘performance culture’ at University of Derby

In the short period of time that Donna Kellogg has been in post at University of Derby as Performance Sports manager she has made a real difference. It will soon surely be ‘the place to be’ for all aspiring athletes in their chosen sport. Performance athletes have been identified, target sports selected and the development of a real specialist support service in strength/conditioning and physiotherapy is about to be unveiled. A scholarships and bursaries package is in place and already this has attracted top overseas athletes.Keep your eyes open for even further sporting progress at University of Derby – keep up the excellent work Donna! Hope Warner and Grace King make ENGLAND debuts

Two players from the East Midlands region have been selected for the England under 13 National team to play in Denmark in October 2012. Congratulations to Hope Warner (Leicestershire) and Grace King (Derbyshire) on the all hard work and dedication they have shown towards their training programmes. This is a tremendous accolade and and very much deserved.
